Zozi Tunzi, former Miss Universe to star at Africa Fashion Week London
Globally renowned since winning the Miss Universe crown back in 2019, Zozibini (Zozi) Tunzi is inarguably one of Africa’s most recognised faces. This weekend, the South African beauty and women’s rights advocate will be the celebrity model at this year’s Africa Fashion Week London.
The crowning of Zozibini Tunzi, in her teeny-weeny afro, as Miss Universe 2019, galvanised unprecedented sense of pride in natural Afro beauty among many black people. In a world where the propagation of racialised European beauty standards on black women still endures, Zozi remains an inspiration to many. She is on record stating that she wanted young black girls reflected in her, and that she has broadly achieved.
“We are so proud to announce that Zozibini Tunzi will be joining us for Africa Fashion Week London 2022 and walking on our catwalk,” organisers of the annual fashion show said in a press statement
As a South African model and cultural ambassador, she now uses her platform to spotlight Africa’s beauty, talent, and global contributions, the statement read.
An activist and advocate against gender-based violence, Zozi works with the United Nations on their HeForShe Alliance to accelerate progress towards gender equality. Redefining the beauty narrative with her bold stance on natural hair, in 2021, she was named Ambassador for the global beauty brand, Lux.
Zozi was born in KuTsolo, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She holds a bachelor’s degree in public relations and image management from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town. Using her passion for travel, art, diversity, and inclusion, her aim is to empower women through humanitarian work and partnerships aligned with her values.
